Acting County Librarian appointed
Contributed by: Erin Todd on 4/22/2008

The Jefferson County Library Board of Trustees named Deputy County Librarian Marcellus Turner as acting county librarian upon the retirement of longtime County Librarian Bill Knott. Turner takes over on May 1 and will manage day-to-day operations while the Trustees conduct a national search for a new permanent county librarian.

Bill Knott, who has led Jefferson County Public Library since 1971, is retiring on April 30, 2008.

"The Library Board of Trustees is pleased that Marcellus Turner will lead the Library over the next several months as acting county librarian. Marcellus has been with JCPL for six years, and during this time, he has impressed the Trustees with his knowledge and ability to lead and direct the Library operations," said Board Chair, Keith Grebe. "We look forward to working with him during this transition period."

Turner joined Jefferson County Public Library in 2002 as deputy county librarian overseeing the operations of its 10 libraries, the Bookmobile and the cataloging, acquisitions and collection development departments.

Prior to joining JCPL, Turner served as assistant executive director of the Rockford Public Library in Rockford, Ill. He also worked as a departmental supervisor at both Tacoma Public Library in Tacoma, Wash., and Atlantic City Free Public Library in Atlantic City, N.J., and has held several positions with academic libraries in Tennessee and Louisiana. Turner has been active in the American Library Association, the Library Administration and Management Association and the Public Library Association. He holds a Master of Library Science from the University of Tennessee.
