Here's your chance to be a fire fighter for a day
Contributed by: Micki Trost on 6/12/2006

It's finally here! The family event of the summer is Saturday, June 10 at Red Rocks Community College. It's West Metro Fire Rescue's 2006 Family Fire Muster. 10, 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood.

Did you know that children playing with matches or lighters set more than 35,000 fires last year in the United States? What's even worse is that about 15-20% of all fire deaths are children, about 750 a year.

That's why you need to bring the kids to the Family Fire Muster on Saturday, June 10, 9:30 am - 2:00 pm at Red Rocks Community College. Dozens of hands-on activities for kids of all ages feature practical fun safety lessons in a fun, carefree environment. Kids and parents love this opportunity to laugh, play, and learn together. Admission is FREE for this outdoor learning extravaganza featuring fire trucks and other big rescue trucks.

New to the event this year is a giant, life-sized puzzle designed to give children the chance to identify the differences between tools for adults, and toys for kids.

Things like hammers, barbeques, and lighters are tools for adults, not toys for children. Kids will enter an inflatable arena where they will have to solve the giant, rainbow puzzle to correctly place smiley faces on the toys they can touch, while carefully avoiding and navigating the tools for adults.

So make your plans to attend West Metro's Family Fire Muster. The event is free, but there will be t-shirts and lunch available for a nominal fee. Please leave your pets at home, as they aren't allowed at the event.

Kids and parents love this opportunity to laugh, play, and learn together through the following activities:

New This Year: Tools Not Toys (preschool kids learn the difference between tools made for adults and toys that are safe for kids)

Practice 9-1-1 (real experience dialing 911 and speaking with a dispatcher)

Teddy Bear Clinic (demonstrates basic first aid techniques using stuffed animals)

Bunker Gear Relay (bunker gear (firefighter gear) dress-up and high energy stop, drop, and roll practice)

Safe Water Rescue (children learn basic water rescue techniques and safety lessons)

Bike Rodeo (teaches young cyclists to wear helmets and obey rules of the road through a tricycle safety course)

Big Rig Tour (familiarizes children with emergency vehicles and fire fighters)

Crawl Low Under Smoke (children practice crawling low under a large, low fabric canopy)

Safe Escape (tour through a smoke trailer and escape practice out a bedroom window)

Hose Practice/Bucket Brigade (demonstrates how fire fighters put out fires and lets kids squirt a real fire hose)

Main Stage and Life Safety Sing Along (live music and interactive entertainment teaching safety lessons through music and movement)

There will also be live musical entertainment for kids, free giveaways and prize drawings, characters and more! Lunch, drinks, and t-shirts are available for a nominal fee. Please leave your pets at home as they aren't allowed at the event!

West Metro Fire Rescue's Family Fire Muster is brought to you by St. Anthony Hospitals with help from Foothills Credit Union, Red Robin Restaurants, Fox31 News, Radio Disney, Comcast and YourHub.com.

ACTIVITY

Do you know what a tool is and what is a toy? Circle all the TOYS that are safe for kids. Put an "X" on the tools that should be left alone.
