Helping People House Each Other
Contributed by: Kait Thompson on 10/18/2006

Since 1971, Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. has been providing affordable, safe, accessible housing and housing services to low-and moderate-income individuals, families, elderly, and disabled populations of Colorado.

This year BRI is celebrating its 35 th anniversary, which we feel, says a great deal about Brothers Redevelopment, Inc.We are proud of our past and enthusiastic about our future as we continue to provide safe, affordable, accessible housing and housing services for the low-income, elderly and disabled of Colorado.

Recently, the Housing Counseling Department of Brothers Redevelopment, Inc., was charged to become the lead agency, by the Colorado Division of Housing, in an effort to create a statewide 1-800 number for foreclosure prevention.According to RealtyTrac, a California based agency, Colorado has led the nation in the most foreclosures for the past 6 months. As of Wednesday, October 11, 2006, Colorado residents who are facing foreclosure, or who have the potential to face foreclosure, are able to call 1-877-601-HOPE (4673) and be directly connected to a housing counseling agency located in their community. This statewide effort has roughly 30 agencies across the state, and a Colorado Foreclosure Prevention office that will be answering the calls and directing callers to their local housing counseling agency.

Through our Home Maintenance and Repair (HMR) Program, by utilizing hundreds of hours of volunteer labor, we are able to contain costs and offer seniors and disabled homeowners an affordable option to make necessary repairs to their homes. The projects most frequently requested by seniors are electrical, heating, and plumbing repairs.Disabled homeowners most often request construction of a wheelchair ramp, retrofitting the bathroom and widening doors.

Our Paint-A-Thon Program recently celebrated its 28 th Anniversary. The Paint-A-Thon is for seniors who qualify under Brothers Redevelopment, Inc.'s income guidelines, and who are unable to afford a commercial painter.Since the inception of this program, over 6,027 homes have been painted by Brothers Redevelopment, Inc.The Paint-A-Thon has become a national model replicated in more than 100 cities nationwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and San Antonio.

Through our Neighborhood Caretakers Program (NCP), volunteers renovate and generally fix-up the exteriors of home in one very low-income deteriorating neighborhood at a time.BRI is invited by neighborhood residents to undertake this work.Projects may include painting drought-sensitive landscaping, removal of inoperative vehicles, and other needs identified by residents.Since the inception of this program in 1988, BRI has used its Neighborhood Caretakers Program to renovate more than 40 neighborhood blocks in several Denver Metro areas. In 2005 and 2006, we went into an unincorporated AdamsCounty neighborhood selected by both BRI and Adams County Officials.

Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. also owns and manages 441 units of HUD-subsidized apartments for low-income seniors and disabled persons. Tenants pay a percentage of their income for a very nice place to live--preserving their dignity and avoiding substandard housing or homelessness.

While all of these community driven activities keep the staff of Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. busy, none of it would be possible without the leadership of President Mary Ann Shing, the Board of Directors, and our generous sponsors, and volunteers.THANK YOU!!
