It was a fun day to conclude the season for the players, coaches, and parents in the Lakewood i9 Youth Sports Flag Football League on Nov. 5. Nice weather, awards, and snacks provided the backdrop for a full slate of playoff games.
Teams played eight regular-season games within their age groups leading up to Playoff Sunday. After their games, each player received an i9 Sports Certificate of Excellence, coaches gave out awards for Most Valuable, Most Improved, and Most Sportsmanlike Players, and players and coaches on the first- and second-place teams received trophies.
In the Montana Division (6-7 year olds), the Rushing Rhinos, coached by Angelo Acosta, had an offensively explosiveday, first beating the Panthers 37-6, then getting by the Lightning, coached by Kirk Jacob, 31-18 in the final.
The very competitive Staubach Division (8-9 year olds) championship was won by the Lightning, coached by Joel Wilder. The Lightning knocked off the Crushers, coached by Joseph Madrill, 26-12, then beat the Falcons, coached by John Triolo, 14-6 in a tight defensive battle for the division crown.
The Titans had control of the Unitas Division (10-14 year olds) all season, and they came through in the playoffs as well. The Titans, coached by Craig Ellis, downed L14, coach by Richard Drake, 49-16, then beat the darkness and the Eagles, coached by Rick Reeves, 42-6 in the final. The Eagles had advanced in a 21-20 semi-final thriller over the Wolverines, coached by Matt Roach.
