Blog Entry 75 of 92 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

More cute than terrifying

Almost every year for Halloween, I try to come up with a far-out idea for a costume. All through my younger days, I wore typical get-ups: She-Ra, a witch, a clown, even a tooth fairy. As I grew older and wanted to have more creative freedom, I tried to dress more obscurely, making my peers work to guess who I am.

One year for high school, I dressed up as Diana Ross from her '60s Supremes days. I borrowed a red dress and a black, bouffant wig from my mom. People just thought I was trying to dress like my mom. Many didn't even know who Ross was.

Another year, I dressed up as a tornado (which was my coolest achievement and I talk about it often). I wore a black sweatshirt and pants and sewed doll house furniture and Barbie dolls unto my clothes. When people asked what I was trying to be, I would spin around and say, "A tornado!" Some got it, most didn't.

My junior year of college, I had a boy-short haircut. I decided to take advantage of the look and dress up as Yoko Ono. I wore a white button-up shirt, a red tie and red-tinted shades. Again, few got it.

This year, I decided to be a personal space invader for Halloween. Get it? Instead of an alien "space invader," a "personal space" invader? Get it? I took the idea from a comic I saw online. Actually, I didn't really think of it until my co-worker John Zwick suggested it would be a neat Halloween costume.

I dressed up in a blue, Star Trek-like dress and wore an orange wig and black boots. I bought green pipe cleaners and fashioned them to look like antennas. I also bought glow-in-the-dark lipstick, but they just ended up making my lips bright white. I was darn proud of myself. All I needed to do was to creep up on folks to make the look complete.

My friend Corrine dressed up as a roller derby girl, even wearing a pair of retro roller skates. Though, from my blog about the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, they wore a little more than what she had on. Well, she looked pretty cute anyhow. See photo.

I guess at some point, I'll probably stop dressing up for Halloween. But it's too much fun planning a costume and seeing what your friends have come up with. While out on the town this weekend, my managing editor Fairlight saw a couple creative costumes. And Garrett Spradlin, of Castle Rock, has impressed me two years in a row with his outrageous costumes.

I'm already thinking of what I'm going to be next year. Any suggestions? Post them below.

One year I went as a porno smurf, think tight blue long sleeve shirt with black hairy chest and gold chains, a smurf hat, and the best part, extra tight white stirrup pants with a long blue sock rolled up to look like a, well, use your imagination...

Great costumes. Which hospital is helping Corrine recover from hypothermia?
