Blog Entry 6 of 55 The Lush Report
I'm trying to bring some of the more overlooked stuff from the local music scene. I have to balance it against a full-time real job, so I can't be as thorough as I'd like, but hopefully you'll find some of the stuff that Mark Brown and Ricardo Baca don't cover. If you've got a tip on a great venue for live music or great musicians to check out, e-mail me here. To bookmark this blog, click here.

Very mercenary
Contributed by: John Zwick   on 5/17/2006

Where a girl squeaking in at 4'11" gets it in her to throw back enough whiskey to match the 6 foot fat guy, I'll never know. I didn't test her beyond a few shots, but I think if the incomparable Melissa Ivey(myspace) had the idea to drink me under the table, it would've been par for the course.

I caught 'er at the Lion's Lair on March 3. She'd headlined a big gig at the Gothic not long before, and opened for Kansas bluegrass crew Split Lip Rayfield at the Bluebird, but this is the first time we caught up since a year ago. People always support their friends and I wasn't so blind as to miss the raw talent oozing out of her, but in the past year, the kid's tightened up. We're talking like five years worth. And, okay, it didn't hurt that she picked up a few country flavors including a killer cover of "Folsom Prison Blues."

But that "rock for the KBCO set" thing she does has a way of keeping secrets. The kid's a predator. Get to know her over a beer and you'll get blown away by her singleminded pursuit of bigger things. But why not? Those calloused fingers, hardened from set after consecutive set, oughtta say a thing or two about "dues." There's an advantage to counting the famously mercenary among your friends, anyway: Free drinks.

Catch Melissa Ivey (and her righteous backup band) at the D-Note in Arvada this Saturday (that's the 11th). Look out for some new jams she'll be bringing up to Chicago later in the month and ask - no, demand - "Gay Country Love Song," and its gleefully frank mention of some sex acts I only wish I could get away with writing about on company dime.

"Hello, I'm Split Lip Rayfield." Or maybe "Ira Rayfield, Ira Rayfield..."

A woman who does a cover of Folsom Prison has my heart immediately. "I shot a man in Reno/Just to watch him die" has been praised as "the greatest song lyric ever written, ever," by a drunk friend of mine once.
