Blog Entry 44 of 93 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

My "Fab Four" for Englewood
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 3/6/2007

So, it's been more than a month since Damon and I moved into our apartment at The Marks in Englewood. Since then, I've been trying to get out and explore the local scenery.

Technically, being a near-native of the Denver area, I've already been to several places around Englewood. I remember when Cinderella City was in full swing when I was younger. I used to ride the carousel and my mom loved shopping at May D & F (which became Foley's and is now Macy's) and Montgomery Ward. I can recall the last days of Cinderella City and my mom loyally going to Montgomery Ward to pick up clothes for us. It was truly sad to see Cinderella City go, but new development has since revitalized the area.

Now, the site houses Wal-Mart, the Alexan City Center apartments, the RTD light rail and lots of cute shops. I like walking around there, especially since there's lots of outdoor art to admire, in addition to the shopping. And with it being about a five-minute drive away from me, what more could I ask for?

And so, here is a list of Englewood eateries I have visited and enjoyed. If you are a longtime resident and know of a local hidden treasure I should go to, please let me know with a comment below.

1. Mile High Coffee. I frequent this coffee shop whenever I'm waiting for the light rail at the Englewood Station or the No. 35 Hampden Crosstown bus. The prices are pretty reasonable (cheaper than my office Starbucks) and the atmosphere boasts a homey feel with piles of fliers from area businesses on their counters.

What I've tried: Hot chocolate, the Snowy Mocha and the Mocha.

2. Gandolfo's Deli. This place is right across from The Marks, but technically it's in Cherry Hills. Oh well, I still consider it Englewood. I love their sandwiches, but they're messy meals! A little pricey, too, but they're hearty and quite tasty. The deli is supposed to be right out of New York and the East Coast, so they have creative names for their sandwiches.

What I've tried: Philly Cream Cheese Steak, Bronx Barbecue and NYPD Bleu.

3. Rico's Pizzeria. I've passed by this place a million times and have always been curious about their food. Damon's mom Cami took me there for lunch one Saturday. The pizzeria is small, not exactly a place to have a sit-down meal. The service that day wasn't the best, either. We had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes between drink and food orders. Cami even had to stand up and grab our drinks for us. But the food -- excellent! Delicious food definitely makes up for mediocre service. I think I shall attempt takeout next time I go there.

What I've tried: Pepperoni Calzone.

4. Twin Dragon Restaurant. Damon and I went here the Sunday after we moved. I nearly stole one of their huge, beautiful paperish lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Our server was sweet and attentive, the food portions were substantial and the prices were again pretty reasonable. We have since made Twin Dragon our official call-in Chinese delivery.

What I've tried: Curried Coconut Noodle Bowl, Chicken Satay in Spicy Peanut Sauce.

My next destination: Grabbing a cup of joe from Caribou Coffee, which happens to be in the same strip mall as Gandolfo's. Stay tuned.

There is a local group called "the Fab Four". By day, they are air traffic controllers. By night they turn into those Beatles blokes. I think they're splendid. We saw them perform with the Longmont Symphony Orchestra and they were ab fab.
