Blog Entry 76 of 93 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Things I'm grateful for
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 11/12/2007

Can you believe that it's the middle of November already? The year seems to have flown by fast (as I've said with years past). Damon and I will be heading down to Colorado Springs to visit my dad and brother for Thanksgiving. This will be the fourth year I spend Thanksgiving without my mom, since she is still in the Philippines until December, when she comes back to visit us.

Back in 2004, the first year Thanksgiving was just me, my brother and my dad, I had to cook the meal. I helped my mom out in the kitchen when I was younger, but she is the whiz. I really don't cook, save for the occasional baked chicken with rice. But I managed a Thanksgiving turkey, green bean casserole, rolls, mashed potatoes with gravy and even a peach cobbler for dessert for the three of us. And, being Filipino, I of course cooked up some rice.

I suspect it will be a repeat next week, when I may have to prepare the meal for the four of us. Thankfully, I'll have my three guys to help me out (I'll make sure of it!).

We don't have any big, big traditions at my house, except going around the table and saying what we're grateful for and saying a Thanksgiving prayer before we eat. (Though, I know my dad will take his traditional siesta after dinner.) Looking ahead, however, I am reminded of all the good (and challenging) things that have happened to me this year:

I'm grateful to have a roof over my head and food on my table.
I'm grateful to have friends and family close by to see and talk to.
I'm grateful that my car is still running.
I'm grateful for working at a wonderful place called YourHub.com.
I'm grateful that I overcame some of my health problems this year.
I'm grateful for another beautiful year being with Damon.

I'd love to know some of your Thanksgiving traditions or tips on what I should make for dinner for my family. Post your comments below.

Ooo, Katherine, that sounds delicious! I'll have to try it out. And unfortunately, because my brother works for Wal-Mart, they're making him work Thanksgiving Day. Which bums me out, but at least Damon and I can spend time with my dad, so he isn't alone. So, I have less to make, but it will be easier.

What a beautiful photo of you and your Mom. Thanks for sharing this blog Charmaine. Here is a tip for making the best mashed potatoes. Warm your milk and butter together till butter is completely melted before you add it to your potatoes. You're not gonna believe the difference! Sometimes I use sour cream or cream cheese for part of the milk and that is delicious as well. Happy Thanksgiving!!

My family is scattered, and we don't get together very often, but I'm grateful that all of my husband's family lives in Colorado. The farthest is in Colorado Springs. We take turns hosting the holiday dinners in our homes. The host/hostess provides the turkey and/or ham, and everybody else brings another part of the dinner.

Touching, Charmaine. Do you really need to ask what to make for dinner? Turkey, of course, and all the trimmings! You and your mom look alike, both cute as can be.
