Blog Entry 49 of 93 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Pain, stress and needles
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 4/26/2007

This morning I had a doctor's appointment at the Rocky Mountain Urgent Care in Englewood. I've been having ongoing pain in my shoulders, arms and chest area, andbecause I've been experiencing this since September, I guess I should get it checked out.

I thought nothing more of this problem than stress-related muscle pain. I'll get a dull ache and after a few minutes of massaging my shoulder or arm, the pain would go away. The pain would be random and the intensity would fluctuate, so it's really a mystery what's going on with me.

The doctor who examined me this morning -- Dr. Huffman -- suggested quite a number of possibilities regarding my symptoms. One: Thyroid problems. That's the gland in your neck and if I have too much thyroid, that could be one cause. Two: Tendonitis. This is when inflammation occurs at a tendon, or the tissue which helps muscle connect to the bone. And three: Heart problems. Now, this one is really out there, considering I'm 25 and my family has no history of heart disease. But we can't rule out possibilities and for all I know, I could have some huge clot blocking my artery, causing circulatory difficulty.

So to be certain and safe, I had an EKG (electrocardiogram) and blood drawn from me. I've never had either. The EKG was fine -- no pain -- but for some reason, they were having some technical difficulties. My readings weren't coming out on one piece of paper, so they had to attempt it a couple times. Luckily, my EKG came out normal.

The blood draw wasn't that bad; except I have very small veins. Each time doctors or nurses try to insert an IV into me, they have a hard time finding a decent vein at my elbow. So my hand works best and even though I've told medical practioners about that, they still attempt it at my elbow. And thankfully, the woman who did my blood draw used a pediatric needle on me, so thefeeling of something foreign being inserted into my hand wasn't so intense.

I won't get my test results back unti probably next week or so. I'm hoping and praying that everything is normal and fine. The pain hasn't been as frequent lately, so I'm thinking that's a good sign.

Stay tuned.

Sorry to hear this news, Charmaine. But physical therapy will do wonders. I had tendonitis when I was 23 -- from decorating cakes for just five months for a living. One of my favorite jobs and one of my least favorite aches ...

I will pray that all will be okay. I always have to insist that the technicians take the blood from my hand too. I don't even let them try my arm any more.

Originally I thought my problem was my neck muscles. The pain would be in my arm, shoulder and chest. It turned out that my problem was pain from a herniated neck disk. NO FUN! Please, if it ever gets to the point of surgery, it may sound silly at first but before surgery, I suggest considering acupuncture along with physical therapy. It helped my herniated neck disk. Also, at the risk of sounding like a spammer, consider a pillow I invented that alleviates my disk problem when the pain reappears. Lying on my back or facedown it corrects the herniation and alleviates the pain and the muscle tension. It helps people with back pain also. It is strange but it works wonders. Good luck, Bob www.SquidFace.com
