Blog Entry 85 of 93 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Using gift cards to buy essentials
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 2/8/2008

I am guilty of committing this crime. Yes, instead of buying fun things with gift cards I receive, such as a new purse or a cappuccino machine, I buy "essential" items like a shower curtain or underwear. (Though, in my previous blog, purchasing underwear helps the economy!)

But I am not alone. According to this Denver Post article, many consumers are using gift cards to buy groceries, laundry detergent and other necessities instead of "luxury" items. This amid dismal sales numbers for merchants during January, the article states.

In these difficult times, when gas prices are high and the economy is shaky, even having free money to spend I feel bad buying excessive items. On my day off yesterday, I used my gift card at Kohl's to buy new boots. Mainly because I desperately needed new shoes for the winter as my old boots are starting to wear out.

I'm not too sure what this means, other than today's economy seems so off that many of us will wait until we receive gift cards to buy needed things. Is it wrong that I'm hoping for my birthday, which is on Feb. 18, that I'll get a gift card from The Great Indoors so I can buy a dresser to put my clothes in?

Charmaine, don't feel alone. I used a gift card just recently to buy groceries. Happy Birthday! And good seeing you the other night!
