Blog Entry 86 of 92 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

A Michelle Kwan encounter
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 2/15/2008

I've been fortunate to have had my share of celebrity run-ins.

In 2003 while I was in New York, I saw former Nsync member Joey Fatone after a showing of Rent on Broadway. I tried to take a photo of him, but he was immediately surrounded by fans. I had 20 minutes each with Regina King and Kerry Washington during the Ray premiere at the Starz film fest in Denver in 2004. It was nerve-wracking interviewing them, but they were very kind and accommodating.

On Jan. 21 of this year, I was at DIA waiting for my cousin to fly in from California when I spotted Madeleine Albright walking through the terminal. I shared the moment with a man sitting next to me and we had a good laugh about a famous person sighting.

Yesterday, Feb. 14, I was at the University of Denver's journalism school doing community outreach. I just finished speaking to a class taught by my former professor Ania Savage. As I was exiting the building, Michelle Kwan comes walking up to the door. I didn't recognize her at first because her hair was longer and highlighted, but what I did first notice was that she wasn't wearing a jacket in this winter weather.

Earnestly I asked her, "Aren't you chilly?" She laughed and told me yes, but her jacket was in the car. Only when she passed by me and went inside did I realize who she was! I called my friend Jennifer as soon as I got home and retold the story. She told me if Britney Spears ever did move to Denver, I would somehow run into her with my luck.

I'm feeling like an idiot today because, you know, Michelle Kwan is an *ice skater* and probably has a higher tolerance for cold weather than I do. Oh well, I was a concerned citizen and perhaps she appreciated that. I was half-tempted to run after her and ask for a photo, but she looked like she was in a hurry. Maybe next time.

In other news, my birthday is Feb. 18 (in case some of you were curious) and I'm taking the day off to enjoy being 26. My dad and brother are coming to visit me for lunch and maybe I'll use my gift cards to buy myself a special birthday present. I do need new pants. :-)

Happy (belated by one day) birthday! When I was living in Milwaukee and working at Barnes & Noble, Halley Barry walked up to my register! I resisted running to the magazine stand to grab the Maxim magazine with her on the cover (along with the other "X-Men" girls) and asking for an autograph. I wanted to be "cool." Ha!

Happy birthday, Charmaine! Despite living in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, I never seem to notice famous people. Or perhaps they avoid me.

Happy birthday, Charmaine! Funny about Michelle Kwan. Celebrity encounters are fun because they seem to go just as yours did. You bump into them, you treat them as ordinary people, you ask ordinary questions, then realize later their celebrity status. I am betting many celebrities enjoy those encounters just as much as we do.
