Blog Entry 43 of 93 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

What I jam to
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 2/21/2007

So in the spirit of fellow Hubbers Brendan Leonard, John Zwickand Tabitha Dialand user Ann Himel, I decided to post a list of some of my favorite music. About 45 percent of my music collection are mixed CDs from songs I downloaded or that friends downloaded and gave to me. This compilation I'm listing is from my dance mix. Note, however, that this is only a sampling of what I listen to and I will be posting more lists in the future.

Dragula, Rob Zombie. I love the looks on people's faces when I play this song. Yeah, I don't exactly look like a Rob Zombie fan, and truth be told, this is only one of a handful of songsI know by him. But I first heard Dragula in The Matrix movie and thought it had such an awesome beat. I rock out every time I hear this.

Hella Good, No Doubt. I saw No Doubt live in 2002 at the Denver Coliseum. They were freaking sweet! My friends and I were about 6 feet away from the stage. I got some good photos of Gwen Stefani coming up to fans and grabbing their hands. When they played this song, everyone started to jump and mosh. I almost got crushed, but still had a good time.

Jumpin' Jumpin', Destiny's Child. What better song to get you riled up for a night of dancing than this? Of course, I love a lot of Destiny's Child music. Always a good dance beat and they all have beautiful voices. I always get my booty shakin' when I hear this song.

Starry Eyed Surprise, Paul Oakenfold. Yes, it has the sort of rhythm and lyrics best reserved for a night of indoor roller skating. And I'm sure the Coke commercial solidified that image. Nonetheless, this song makes me happy and gets me dancing. I would recommend it for an informal house party when people are too busy guzzling their beers to actually listen to the words.

Ghetto Supastar, Mya, Pras, ODB. I think I first heard this back in eighth grade. My friends made fun of me because I got most of the words wrong, but I do that to all of my favorite music. This song makes me laugh, too, because think about it: "Ghetto supastar. That is what you are. Comin' from afar. Reaching for the stars."Yup, that's me.

#1 Crush, Garbage. Garbage opened for No Doubt at that 2002 concert in the Denver Coliseum. They also were freaking sweet! Shirley Manson has a mesmerizing voice. She sounds just as awesome live as she does on the band's albums. This song to me epitomizes how love can completely envelop you. It has a solid beat, smart, near-obsessive lyrics and Manson's soulfulness; but #1 Crush is not your dance club type of song. I groove to it, nevertheless.

Closer, Nine Inch Nails. (Warning: The video I linked to is uncut and graphic.) Again, not your garden-variety dance song, but for some reason, Closer gets me going. Trent Reznor has the sort of voice that ignites primal longing, both physical and emotional. The song has explicit lyrics, but I think Reznor is a genius when it comes to his music and words. I've only been getting into him recently, but this was the first song I heard by NIN.

Gangsta Lovin, Eve, Alicia Keys. Pair Eve's tight rapping with Key's angelic voice and you got a song worthy of any trendy club's playlist. "I just wanna rock you, all night long." Yeah, that's right. Another song I love by Eve is her duet with Gwen Stefani on Let Me Blow Your Mind. I always admire female rappers because I believe it's still a realm dominated by men.

Better Off Alone, Alice Deejay. I like techno music. One of my roommates in college was a techno-freak and even taught techno aerobics. That class certainly would have been a butt-kicker. So it was because of her that I got into the genre. I don't know of many DJs or techno artists, but this is one of my favorites because it's got a fast tempo, but won't make you pull a muscle trying to dance to it.

So there is a sampling of my dance mix. I listen to these songs while editing pages on Friday and Monday and when I'm trying to do chair aerobics (basically just grooving in my seat). I'd love to read about the music you listen to. Start a blog and start posting your music list.

You probably won't read this, but just wanted to let you know I love all the songs you've got on here. That Alice Deejay song is so hot. And if you like Oakenfold, you should try the song Faster Kill Pussycat. A lot of techno snobs don't like it because it's poppy and features the vocals of Brittany Murphy, but I think it's pretty great.

Ohmygawd! I am old. I don't recognize any of those songs. I only hear the Cure now as elevator music in Eckerds. You whippersnappers! I'm going to watch some of those talkies now.

With you on the No Doubt song. So with you that I have a radio station on Pandora.com based on the song. I listen to it frequently. Actually, I find most of your songs quite enjoyable.
