Blog Entry 72 of 93 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Destination: Chicago. Concert.
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 9/13/2007

I saw Chicago last night. No, not the city or the musical, but the band. They played Sept. 12 at the Fillmore Auditorium on Colfax Avenue and Clarkson Street. I've been to other concerts at the Fillmore, and this one was by far the most mellow. Of course, the place was filled with concertgoers who were at least 10 years older than me.

It wasn't the raging mosh-pit atmosphere that was the Alice in Chains concert last year, but chairs filled the floor and people scrambled to get them. (Maybe that was the mosh-pit action for the night.)

My friends Megan and Jennifer and I were at the Fillmore around 7:30. The place was getting full, but Chicago had not started playing. Our tickets said the show was suppose to start at 7. When Chicago did appear on stage a little before 8, both Jennifer and I wondered if that was them or an opening band. It was them.

Yes, you can rip on me all you like for not recognizing such a long-standing band as Chicago. Granted, they reached their peak before I was born. (Or while I was a toddler.) One of the band members even told the audience that they had done 30 albums up to now. And judging from the audience demographic, I can believe that.

I only know two songs from Chicago: You're the Inspiration and If You Leave Me Now. Megan, whom I have known since eighth grade, turned to me and asked why You're the Inspiration sounded familiar and I reminded her we sang it for a high school play. Back then, I didn't know it was a Chicago song. But my theater teacher probably did.

They do sound awesome live. I found myself swaying to the music and clapping excitedly at the end of each set. It wasn't a big, rocking event (mainly because people were sticking to their chairs), but it was a fun concert nonetheless. Jennifer asked me whether I think the members of Chicago still get chicks. I replied that at this point, they probably are married with children. Or divorced, with children. But perhaps they get the occasional fans who want them to sign their bodies.

I'll just keep my ticket as my memento.

How fun! I just like the shiny colors in the pictures. I grew up in the 70's and remember Peter Cetera well. *growl*

Barb, you where at that Allman Brothers concert?! I still have scars. Those security guards that dragged me off of the stage used excessive force.

Yep. Chicago, formed in 1967, is a geezer band and we fans are mostly Baby Boomers. Okay, geezers. There was a time we would not have been sitting at a concert swaying and clapping politely. I remember the time I went to see the Allman Brothers in concert and a naked dancing guy had to be dragged off stage. Fans stormed stages, police busted heads and heavy clouds of smoke often obscured views. Kid stuff.
