Charmaine in the city
I've called the Denver area home for more than two

decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on
Brendan's List. Rock on!
Always the procrastinator

I consider myself pretty organized. I know where my all my important papers are, my bills are paid on time and I'm usually aware of meetings and dates. But I'm also a procrastinator. In college, even when I knew a big paper or project was due on a certain day and I had two weeks to work on it, I would wait until the night before or two nights before to start it. I know, how did I manage good grades then? (I hope none of my professors are reading this.)
So, even though I know Christmas is coming up, I haven't even gotten around to shopping for my family yet. It's Dec. 19 and the only things I've bought so far are a card and a book. I know, it's not the gifts that matter, but that sense of sharing and giving still count during this time, right? it was easier when you were younger and you can make cute stuff like Popsicle stick picture frames or glitter-covered paper candy canes. I miss that. I'm sure my mom misses that, too.
It's not difficult to shop for my family, though. Especially my dad. He loves books. He has a huge library and I know he would love any new piece of literature from me. And that's what I usually get him. For his birthday, Father's Day or Christmas, I buy him books. I've tried to change it up a bit, though, by giving him a gift card ... to Barnes & Noble.
My brother? He likes books, too. Comic books, movies, games. He's nerdy like me, so he isn't too difficult to buy for, either. Now, my mom is a different story. I used to think I knew what to get her, but I'm starting to run out of lotion scents and bath product ideas. I was told by
Brendan that chocolate could be a way to go, and I know my mom is a fan of
Godiva. But I've given her chocolates previously.
And
Damon? Ha! He's pretty testy himself. I've given him DVDs, clothes, a
Calvin and Hobbes book ... even a six-pack of beer. (That was my Valentine's present for him.) Last year for his birthday, I took him to an Alice in Chains concert at the Fillmore. That was fun, but hard to top at this time. I've already told him I'd buy him more socks (c'mon, everyone needs more socks, right?), and perhaps I'll just take him out for dinner somewhere.
And what about all my friends? Geez! And what is today? Wednesday? Ha, again! Well, I got a reminder today from Brendan and
Eric that I at least won't have to worry about wrapping paper. The
USGS Mapping Center in Lakewood offers free maps to wrap presents. That would be cool and unique and save me some money. At least in that department.
So, tonight I'm hoping to find some treasures in those beat-up bargain bins. I also hope Cherry Creek or Park Meadows aren't too crowded. Nothing worse than dealing with the holiday shopping crowd. I should know, I'm one of them. Wish me luck.
