Blog Entry 79 of 92 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Train derailment delays my morning commute
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 12/11/2007

I knew the snow was going to be a problem on my way home last night, Dec. 10. I read news reports earlier that day announcing how continued snow storms will delay the Tuesday morning commute. I'm glad I don't have to drive to get to work and I take the light rail every day.

But, this morning as I was about to leave to head over to the Englewood station, my boyfriend Damon calls me on my cell.

"Have you left yet?" he asked me. No, I tell him, I had just put on my hat and coat.

"Well, I heard on the radio that a train got derailed." Where? I ask.

"Littleton." Wow, that station is only two stops before Englewood. I wonder if service is still going. Was the train heading north or south? I interrogate Damon for more answers.

"I don't know," he replied. "All I heard was a train was derailed. So be careful."

He was still on the highway, heading over to his work at Go Nissan. He had left almost an hour before and was still driving around. Crazy how snow paralyzes us during this time.

I drove over to the Englewood light rail station and fortunately found a parking spot. I hear over the station's intercom that trains were 10 to 20 minutes delayed because of the derailment. The announcer added that there will be no light rail service south of the Oxford station, which is right before Englewood. Again, feeling fortunate that I haven't been too affected by all this.

However, while on my way downtown, I thought of my co-worker Rebecca Zimmerman. She and I have ridden the train together home and she gets off at the last station, Littleton-Mineral. I knew this would be affecting her.

Coincidently, she and I had rode that same train to work, though I think she was in a different car. She told me how it took her two hours since she had to drive to the next operating station, Oxford. And through all the traffic jams of other commuters trying to get to the trains or just trying to drive on Santa Fe, I can't imagine being out on the roads at this time.

We made it to work at about 9:45 a.m. or so. Not too bad, just 45 minutes late. Once I got in though, I searched all the news Web sites for more details about what happened. Seems like a coal train heading south got derailed and the light rail ran into some of the coal that fell on the tracks. There were no injuries.

Rebecca mentioned the snow was supposed to stop falling at around 11 a.m. Well, it's about 11:30 and looking outside my window, all seems calm now. Let's hope our commute home is smoother.
