Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue and Centaurus High School will host the first annual Doggie Dash 5K Race and Fair at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, May 18, at Caranaci Park, 955 Bella Vista Drive, Louisville.
Since its inception in November 2007, Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue has placed 56 sweet, lovable dogs with Colorado families-saving them from being euthanized in animal shelters located in rural Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri.
Amy Dickerson, a registered nurse at Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville, directs Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue's network of 12 volunteers who work tirelessly to find homes for good pets, as well as to educate the public about the causes of animal shelter overpopulation.
"Saving these dogs from euthanasia is the first step," Dickerson said. "We want to continue to chip away at the underlying primary causes of overpopulation by promoting public awareness for spaying and neutering pets as well as putting an end to puppy mills."
Molly McGannon, a teacher at Centaurus High School, enlisted the help of the school's Delta Epsilon Chi Association to host the race and fair.
Doggie Dash 5K participants can register until race day with up to two dogs. Registration forms are available at www.active.com. The cost is $26, and all participants will receive a moisture-wicking T shirt and other gifts. Prizes will be awarded for various categories of achievement from best time to best costume.
In addition, exhibitors are welcome to participate in the fair. The registration fee is $40.
The proceeds from registration fees will benefit the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue and the Centaurus High School Scholarship fund.
