CMS students fight bullying with Pink Week

With cheers of "Bullies stink, wear pink!" students at Campus Middle School declared Nov. 12-16 " Stand Up Against Bullying Pink Week" and encouraged their classmates to wear pink and sign a pink pledge against bullying.

Several seventh graders came up with the idea, after seeing a news report about two seniors in Nova Scotia. The two boys, after seeing a freshman being bullied for wearing a pink shirt, rallied the entire student body to wear pink to show support for the young man and to alienate the bullies.

Campus students took the idea several steps farther. They organized discussions and activities to educate students about bullying. More than 800 students signed "Kids Against Bullying" pledges, and the entire student body participated in Mix It Up At Lunch, where they were challenged to sit with people they didn't know and make some new connections and friends.

The "Pink Week" activities were covered by 9News, which aired a story on Nov. 16. You can see that story on 9News.com by following this link: http://www.9news.com/rss/article.aspx?storyid=81120

CMS Dean of Students Teri Baldwin was impressed that the students - not adults - organized the anti-bullying week. She told 9News "When they look to each other and they see that they're standing up for each other, the masses are not going to tolerate it. That's what really makes a difference."
