Cottonwood Creek Elementary School turns 30!
Contributed by: Mara Sheldon on 10/20/2006

In 1976 a new school in Englewood opened its doors for the first time with 450 students, 19 teachers and a cougar as its mascot. Elementary No. 15, as it was known back then, became Cottonwood Creek Elementary School - named for the nearby creek which flows into Cherry Creek Reservoir.

This year Cottonwood turns 30. Its faculty, staff and PTO have grown too. Thousands of students have passed through its doors - many who now have children attending Cottonwood.

"In 1981 I graduated from Cottonwood," said Dananne Solomon. "Six years ago my husband and I made the decision to send our three girls there as well. It's great that Cottonwood has kept its dedication to education and the children. I would not want our girls to be anywhere else."

Cottonwood's first principal, Jerry Kral began a tradition of excellence working with various teachers to devise creative and thoughtful methods that would in turn provide students with a fun and motivating educational environment. Now in her second year at Cottonwood, Principal Mary Shay continues Principal Kral's enthusiasm with her open-door policy, involvement with the staff, and obvious love for students she works with every day.

"I feel fortunate to be a part of the Cottonwood Creek learning community," said Shay. "During our school's 30th birthday, I look forward to celebrating with our students and their families by honoring the traditions of our rich past, enjoying our present successes, and inspiring a future of continued achievement."

To celebrate its 30th birthday, Cottonwood is offering alumni and students the rare opportunity to make their mark on the school permanent. Through its 30th Birthday Brick Restoration Project, the school's PTO, lead by Shelley Lucas, is selling bricks with monogramming of messages and symbols that will be cemented together in a design in front of the school.

"The important aspect of this campaign is that it will allow community members and alumni the opportunity to contribute to a visible part of this project," said Lucas. "With an engraved brick, you can pay tribute to a family member, leave a message for future generations, or simply include your name among those that have supported our school."

Cottonwood welcomes anyone in the community who would like to make a lasting impression by purchasing a brick to be displayed for many years to come. Please contact the school's front office at 720-554-3200 for further details. The school will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony and unveiling in the spring of '07.
