The Women's College of the University of Denver will host an exhibition of the Mizel Museum, an art installation by artist Christy Honigman, at the Hirschfeld Gallery in the Chambers Center for the Advancement of Women on the DU campus through April 31. A celebration reception, sponsored by The Gay & Lesbian Fund of Colorado and featuring Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff, was held in the Chambers Center on March 5 to kick-off the show.
The concept of Tikkun Olam originated with Rabbi Isaac Luria in the city of Safed, Israel during the sixteenth century. Today, Tikkun Olam is identified with working for social justice, peace, freedom, equality and the restoration of the environment.
Honigman and the Mizel Museum conceived the collaborative art project to illustrate the interconnectedness and mutual interdependence of all human beings and to promote intercultural respect and awareness. Honigman worked with organizations including the Colorado Refugee Network and Rocky Mountain Survivors to enlist project participants. Contributors-many of whom are survivors of torture and exile-are not professional artists, but individuals from all walks of life and many different countries. Each participant created a piece of work illustrating his or her own concept of Tikkun Olam.
The resulting exhibition features 12 seven-foot, five-paneled columns upon which 54 participants interpret the universal values of social justice, compassion, freedom, equality and peace in pictures, poems and songs. An audio accompaniment by the project participants is also available.
"Tikkun Okam embodies the spirit of social justice, equality, compassion and peace, reflecting the values and principles inherent in The Women's College and The Chambers Center," says Lynn M. Gangone, dean of The Women's College of the University of Denver. "We are proud to host this exhibition of the Mizel Museum and grateful to the The Gay & Lesbian Fund of Colorado for their support of our celebration reception featuring House Speaker Romanoff."
The Chambers Center for the Advancement of Women is located at 1901 E. Asbury Ave. in Denver. Hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.
The exhibition is available daily to school tours, for grades six and above, through the Mizel Museum Education Department at 303-394-9993, extension 3. In addition, the Mizel Museum created a
Tikkun Olam Educator Curriculum, designed to raise in students a sense of compassion for all citizens of the world and to advance a plan of action to individually participate in repairing the world.
