Author to sign her kids' book, a collaboration with photographer John Fielder

When she was growing up in Englewood, one of Claudia Cangilla McAdam's favorite spots was the Englewood Public Library. Decades later, the facility is in a different location, but it still holds a special place in the heart of this award-winning children's author.

"As a child, reading was my favorite pastime," she said. "As an adult, that hasn't changed. I remember with great fondness not only visiting the Englewood Library but also picking out books each Wednesday when the Bookmobile made its stop at Clayton Elementary School."

An Englewood High School graduate, McAdam will be one of more than 50 authors participating in Englewood Public Library's 9th annual "Meet the Faces Behind the Books" Open House for Colorado Authors, which will be held on Sunday, April 13 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the library located at 1000 Englewood Parkway on the first floor of the Englewood Civic Center. The authors' latest book titles will be available for purchase and signing the day of the event.

McAdam, who has won national awards for her children's fiction and nonfiction, will be autographing her newest work, Maria's Mysterious Mission, a children's book that features illustrations by Anna-Maria Crum and photography by noted Colorado nature photographer John Fielder.

"This is my second children's book collaboration with Fielder," McAdam said. The duo's first title was Do You See What I See?. In McAdam's text to Maria's Mysterious Mission, a llama (Maria) living in Colorado, is homesick for her native South America. When she sets off on a mysterious mission with a heavy pack on her back and a heavier weight on her heart, she forges a new friendship and comes to see her life in Colorado through very different eyes.

"The illustrator, Anna-Maria Crum, has done a masterful job of blending her paintings with John Fielder's photography," McAdam explained. Readers are challenged to discover on each page where the illustration stops and the photography begins. "I can't wait to share this book with visitors to the library that made such a huge impact in my life."

The "Meet the Faces Behind the Books" Open House is a free, family-oriented event which will be made even more enjoyable with music provided by harpist Susie Spangler. For more information, phone 303-762-2550.
