The Spirituals Project and The Shadow Theatre collaborate on the world premiere of "The Spirit of Frederick Douglass" at DU's Newman Center

Directed by Jeffrey Nickelson and featuring the 75-member TSP Choir

An unprecedented cultural collaboration between two of Denver's leading African American arts organizations, the award-winning Shadow Theatre Company and The Spirituals Project (TSP), will present the world premiere of The Spirit of Frederick Douglass along with African American spirituals music performed by TSP's 75-person volunteer community choir at the Newman Center on the University of Denver campus November 3, 4 and 5, 2006.

The world premiere performance featuring Jeffrey Nickelson and Hugo Jon Sayles draws from the speeches and letters of the great African American leader. Douglass was, with President Abraham Lincoln, one of the great public figures of nineteenth century America, and his message of human rights, social justice, and struggle remains fresh and vibrant. The one-actor play will be complemented during the first run by the full choir of The Spirituals Project singing songs of Douglass' time.

The Spirit of Frederick Douglass was adapted for the stage by Denver playwright Larry Bograd, an award-winning author of numerous books, short stories, and plays. It will be directed by Jeffrey Nickelson, with a set designed by Michael Duran and multimedia by Brian Freedland.

The November 3 educational performance at 7 p.m. is a special cultural outreach event for students at no cost.

It is open to Colorado schools as a vibrant supplement to their American history curriculum that brings to life key events during the Civil War. Each year The Spirituals Project brings youth groups from around the Denver metro area to this open dress rehearsal. Months in advance of the performance, TSP created workbooks which provide background on spirituals and interactive exercises to bring the history to life. Caran Ware Joseph, choir director for Park Hill ECE - 8th, a Denver public school values TSP's program saying "it provides a cultural program not currently available. It gives my students further insight into the spirituals that they will be performing in their own upcoming concert." The educational package, transportation and performance tickets are provided free as a contribution to the community.
