Many of us recall Louis Armstrong's rendition of the song "Hello, Dolly" and perhaps many also recall the Broadway musical with the same name. In fact, "Hello, Dolly" is one of the best loved and most enduring musicals of all time. Thus, René Meyer, drama director at Denver Christian High School, had little trouble selecting this show for DC's spring production.
Denver Christian High School will present "Hello, Dolly," April 19-21. Theater goers will remember the story where matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi played by Emily Hageman travels to set up a match for her client Horace Vandergelder played by Steve Cutillo. In the end Dolly decides to nab Horace for herself, but to do so she has to arrange a number of other perfect matches. Though while the play is full of good music, it is also full of laughs as the cast sorts out the complicated web Dolly must weave to achieve her goals.
The show features a large cast, elaborate costumes and a wonderful set. The set, designed by DC parent Dale Flanders is amazing. The main piece, a feed store for one scene, is rotated to give a restaurant setting for the next scene. Flanders, a theater major himself, says that a great set coupled with really good costumes makes the actors feel important and that will make them better actors. If that is the case, this will certainly be a great show, because the costumes, some purchased from "Seams Like Old Times," and coordinated by parent Nancy Petty, are outstanding. These, combined with Flander's set, great music, lots of humor and dancing, should provide audiences with a couple of hours of great entertainment.
Meyer, after her successful return to drama at DC last fall, is assisted by Wilma Wiersma. Julie Reitz is the accompanist and Kathy Maes is the choreographer. Tickets will be available at the door for the 7 pm shows Thursday and Friday and the 3 pm matinee on Saturday. Further information is available by calling 303-733-2421 or at www.denver-christian.org.
