Saucy Maid Accused of Murder
Contributed by: Gloria Shanstrom on 2/1/2008

Vintage Theatre presents

A Shot in the Dark

Adapted by Harry Kurnitz
from the play "L'Idiote" by Marcel Achard

Directed by Craig A. Bond

(Denver, CO) - Josefa Lantenay, a good hearted and guileless child of nature is hauled before the magistrate on a charge of murder, having been found unconscious, nude, and clutching a gun, with her lover dead beside her. What is most shocking to the magistrate is the complete frankness with which she describes her life as a parlor maid and her affairs with both the dead chauffeur and her aristocratic employer. She is so ingenious that the magistrate, at the risk of his juridical neck, decides that she could not have committed the murder. The investigation expands to include both the aristocratic employer, who cannot answer yes or no in less than a paragraph and whose own polysyllables make him yawn, and his wife who descended in direct line from Attilla the Hun and looks it. She has been having an affair with her husband's best friend. The magistrate finds the right culprit and the open hearted little parlor maid offers herself to him as a present.

A former reporter, Harry Kurnitz arrived in Hollywood in 1938 after being hired to write the screenplay for his own story, "Fast Company." He stayed to become a prolific screenwriter, working on everything from Errol Flynn swashbucklers to Danny Kaye comedies. He also found time to become a successful novelist and playwright ("A Shot in the Dark", "Once More with Feeling") and was nominated for Broadway's 1964 Tony Award as Best Author (Musical), along with his collaborator Noel Coward, for "The Girl Who Came to Supper."

The cast includes Jessica Laulhere as Josefa, David Harms as Benjamin Beaurevers, Scott Glennon as Paul Sevigne, Peter Burghart as Guard, Bill Thompson as Morestan, Ted Bishop as LeBlanche, Boni McIntyre as Dominique Beaurevers and Whitney Nuchols as Antoinette Sevigne.

Denver's Vintage Theatre Productions- founded in 2002 over a vintage martini glass- is changing its nomadic ways and settling into the newly renamed Vintage Theatre (2119 E 17th Ave in Denver) for the entirety of its 2008 season.
