55 yrs ago- Englewood changed! We had light rail!
Contributed by: Bill Holland on 9/18/2005

Let's return about 55 yrs to Englewood's days just prior to their 50yr. Golden Jubilee in 1953 when Bob Hope performed live at what was the Denny Miller Memorial park. I was a young boy in Jr/Sr. high school at 3600 S. Bdwy, (which is now Flood Middle School, named for Mary Louise Flood). My first job was across the street at one of the first KingSoopers stores to open. I sacked and carried groceries for 35 cents/hr and was glad to sometimes receive 10-20 cent tips. The school and the long gone store are subjects in these "Then & Now" photos. I continued from the above Jr High school to the new Englewood High School built at 3600 S. Logan, where my class of 1953 was the first to graduate. This was the year of the Golden Jubilee, and many men in town grew beards, including me and Don Harrach, (my best friend), for our graduation. My photos of then and now of the new school are unrecognizable due to the construction additions. My after school and Saturday job was at the Home Hobby store, 3360 S. Bdwy. owned by Griggs Dayton. We sold cameras, records, and had some of the first TV sets in Colo. We intently watched the black & white test patterns for weeks! I took many photos of downtown Englewood from this store on Bdwy's east side. The 1949 photo shows our electric "light" rail system with a Standard gas station on the corner. Later photos are of our City Hall, and then its demolition making way for new commercial business. There are photos of my home area at Oxford and Elati. My mother is in the driveway ready to go shopping in our 1940 Packard club coupe. The driveway of the home is much the same today with a huge tree and a much newer car. Looking west on Oxford ave. it was a dirt road, no curbs, gutters, and little vegetation. Today, the same two telephone poles seem to be there, but so is asphalt, concrete, and trees. At the time, I was still in school with my hobby being photography. I had my own "small business", Holland Photo Service, taking photos for school, and for the Englewood Herald newspaper. The Herald asked me for a photo of the new Model Home open for inspection at 4311 S. Logan. Today, it is much the same, but trees and shrubs cover much of the home itself. Enjoy these photos of our past great days growing up in Englewood!
