Matthew Hooten, 20, a 2005 graduate of Cherry Creek High School, and current 3rd-year student at the University of Wyoming, studying anthropology/archaeology, has been selected to participate in a month-long field research program on one of the most remote islands in the world, Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island (Chile).

The program will take place during the month of July, 2007, and is a part of a long-range, multi-disciplinary research project in collaboration with Rapa Nui, Chilean, and American archaeologists, led by Dr. Terry Hunt of the University of Hawaii. Applications from around the world were entered for this program, and Matt was one of 17 international participants chosen. Other participants taking part in this year's program are from the U.S., South Africa, and Ireland.

The research will center on the north and northwest coast of the island, and will involve not only mapping and studying of the world-famous carved head statues (moai), but will also include other religious sites, home sites, caves, etc. In addition, part of the experience will include teaching and working with the indigenous children on the island.

When Matt returns in early August, he will have barely a month to prepare for his fall semester. He will forego a semester in Laramie after being accepted for a foreigh study program at the University of Edinburgh, in Edinburgh, Scotland.
