Well, if you want to know about babies, then Dr. Benjamin Spock it is.
If you want to know about
Star Trek, then Mr. Spock is my main man!... er, well, Vulcan that is.
When Gene Roddenberry came up with the hit show
Star Trek, Spock was our first up close and personal look at a real life Hollywood alien. It was pretty impressive to have an alien that showed no emotion. Being a 1960's show where expressing oneself was the theme of the decade, Spock was an alien in complete control, ALL THE TIME!
He was supposed to be a red toned half Martian alien when the show first started, but Spock turned out to be a ghostly white being with just a hint of green thrown in the make up for good measure. The show's producers wanted him out after the first few episodes, but creator Gene Roddenberry put his foot down and wouldn't allow it. Spock was the character that could wrangle Captain Kirk back to his senses and give Dr. McCoy a good dose of humor each episode.
What was it about Mr. Spock that we could relate to? We did we come to admire and adore? Afterall, he is one of the top TV icons of all time per
TV Guide. This is my top five list:
- His fashion sense when it came to eyebrow grooming. Who couldn't ignore the logical sense of the upward sloping eyebrow lines.
- His long, lanky physique. Next to Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy, Spock seemed like a willow tree of knowledge.
- The pointy ears. Every time I glued a pair of the pointy tips on the end of my own ear with spirit gum, I instantly felt smarter.
- Being able to pull the first two fingers on my hand apart from the second two fingers on my hand to form the Vulcan "V".
- Marveling at his ability to take a cold intellectual thought and turn it into a warm human statement.
Real life actor Leonard Nimoy brought this character to life. And regardless of the part he's played in TV or movies since
Star Trek, Mr. Spock lives on in Nimoy's being, down to the cellular level.
Mr. Nimoy will be at Starfest come April 20-22. He'll be on hand to answer questions about Klingons, Starfleet, and the USS Enterprise. Save your baby questions for the other Spock (and no,he's not the Evil Twin...)
So, when I glue those pointy tips to the end of my own, draw the eyebrow pencil line upward, and separate the first two fingers on my hand from the second two, I better not hear you say:
Hey, it's Dr. Spock! Live Long and Prosper.
