LOCAL YOUTH CLUB CELEBRATES 'MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY'
BY MAKING HUMAN RIGHTS KNOWN
ENGLEWOOD - Members of the Rocky Mountain Youth for Human Rights Club celebrated "Make a Difference Day," October 28 th by making a difference one-on-one in their community.
After studying the
What Are Human Rights? booklet, a child-friendly version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the club members went door-to-door in Englewood and read local citizens the 30 basic human rights afforded to them by the Universal Declaration. The Declaration was written by Eleanor Roosevelt and adopted by the member nations of the U.N. in 1948.
"Human Right number 29 says, 'we have a duty to other people, and we should protect their rights and freedoms' "said Julie Godfrey, the children's human rights teacher, "I encourage the children not only to push for and defend their own human rights, but also to take greater responsibility for the fundamental freedom of others. Education is really the first step and everyone the children spoke to was very pleased to know what their human rights actually are."
The Rocky Mountain Youth for Human Rights Club is sponsored by the Church of Scientology of Colorado and is part of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) which has the purpose of teaching youth around the globe about human rights so they can become valuable advocates for tolerance and peace. The Club uses educational materials provided by YHRI for teaching human rights to children. These include the
What Are Human Rights? booklet and the
Human Rights Handbook which has human rights lesson plans, projects and audiovisual teaching aids.
