The sets and costumes are put away, but the enthusiasm for the all-Academy musical
Honk!
continued at St. Mary's Academy for days following four SRO performances of this delightful musical in late April.
"With close to 90 actors, singers and technicians, Honk! was a collaborative endeavor that owed much of its success to the amazing way that all the students worked hard together and brought out the best in one another," says
Karen Wuertz
, Fine Arts Department Chair. For the eighth grade boy who played Ugly, the Duckling, that opportunity to work with students of all ages, from kindergartners to seniors, was the most memorable part of the experience and reaffirmed his hope " to continue in theater for the rest of my life"
Roberta Hamilton-Griggs
, a drama and music teacher at St. Mary's Academy, was artistic director of Honk! Hamilton-Griggs is a professional director, actor and singer with many theatre credits in Denver. Her productions at St. Mary's Academy include
Godspell, Twelfth Night, Quilters, The Alto Part,
and
Seussical, the Musical.
Honk! is among her favorite shows. "One of the great things about Honk! is that there are so many interesting roles and we had so many talented students to perform them here at St. Mary's Academy. I was so proud of all our students who took the risk to perform on stage for the first time," says Hamilton-Griggs.
The St. Mary's Academy stage now buzzes with choral groups and orchestras rehearsing for upcoming concerts. "We were sad for
Honk!
to come to an end, but the bonds the students created with one another will be remembered for a lifetime." says Hamilton-Griggs.
