With the 2008/2009 school year underway, Bonfils Blood Center announces the winners of its 2007/2008 Student Body High School Challenge.
Each year Bonfils teams up to host blood drives with high schools around the state in an effort to encourage and inspire young people to become lifelong blood donors. Awards are given in five categories: Large School Overall, Small School Overall, Most First-time Donors, Greatest Improvement and Most Community Donor Center Donors. Across the 113 schools that participated in the challenge, more than 7,400 blood donations were collected and more than 4,100 students gave their first-ever blood donation.
Columbine High School in Littleton, which was also recognized with a national award for the school's commitment to the community blood supply, clenched the Student Body High School Challenge Champion in the Large School Overall award which is based on the total number of eligible juniors and seniors. A total of 173 units of blood were donated at two drives during the school year. Monte Vista High School in Monte Vista, took top honors in the Small School Overall category. The school hosted six community blood drives and collected 392 units of blood.
Chaparral High School located in Parker, received the Most First-time Donors award for a total of 110 first-time donors while the Greatest Improvement award was bestowed on Rangeview High School in Aurora. The school increased participation in the challenge by more than 400 percent over the previous year. A new category, Most Community Donor Center Donors, was created to recognize students who made donations at one of Bonfils' nine fixed-site donor centers on behalf of their school. Kent Denver School in Englewood, is the proud recipient of this inaugural award. Trophies will be presented to each school this fall.
Additionally, all participating high school students were entered to win a trip, sponsored by Comcast, to visit the MTV studios in New York. The winner, also from Rangeview High School, was chosen in a random drawing earlier this month.
Bonfils Blood Center celebrates 65 years of saving lives through its ongoing stewardship of the community blood supply and the instrumental role it continues to play in the lives of patients in need throughout Colorado and beyond. Bonfils Blood Center supplies blood to more than 200 healthcare facilities and needs to collect more than 4,000 blood donations weekly to meet the needs of the community and to be prepared for any unexpected events.
