Candidate Q&A: Les Cowger - School Board
Contributed by: Les Cowger on 10/10/2007

Editor's note: YourHub.com is asking candidates running for office in the November election to complete a questionnaire. Look for the Q&As to run in the print editions up to the Nov. 6 election.

My name:Les Cowger

Office I'm running for: Board of Director, Englewood School Board

Age: 44

My family: 2 young men, one in college, one in fifth grade. 2 cats.

What I do: Business Analyst for the Arapahoe County Department of Human Services

My favorite place in town to hang out: All over. I like taking bike rides around town with my son. The Englewood Rec Center and Table Steaks are two other places I enjoy.

What I like most about living here: I like the sense of community. Getting to know people and being involved with different activities are things that interest me.

My interests and hobbies: My one hobby is I've collected matchbooks for over 25 years. My interests include working with my son's Cub Scout pack, golfing when I can, and helping with school activities.

What is my favorite thing to cook: Buffalo Wings.

People who inspired me (and how): My mom and dad taught me to persevere, and they gave me my work ethic. Being a parent is not always easy, and I learned a great deal from them. My faith inspires me every day.

How I have contributed to the community: I've been involved with my kids' schools over the years. I am a member of the Financial Advisory Committee to the School Board. Our Cub Scouts have also been involved in community activities such as a food drive and Englewood Days.

What are the biggest issues facing Englewood Schools now: I think the school district has faced declining enrollment for a few years and this ties directly to where our budget stands. The recent review of the curriculum is a great start for our district to become a model for other metro area school districts. Another issue to address is why Englewood citizens take their school age children out of district. Our coummunity has a lot to offer, and this should be promoted.
