Editor's note: YourHub.com is asking candidates running for office in the November election to complete a questionnaire. Look for the Q&As to run in the print editions up to the Nov. 6 election.
My name:
Karen A. Miller
Office I'm running for:
Englewood School Board (incumbent)
Age:
54
My family: Three children:
Kari, Dana and Matthew
What I do:
Radiation oncology nurse
My favorite place in town to hang out:
Currently, my own backyard (newly landscaped)
What I like most about living here:
The small-town atmosphere
My interests and hobbies:
Scrapbooking, stamping and flower gardening
My favorite thing to cook:
Desserts - I love to bake!
People who have inspired me (and how):
My children. I am a single parent and my children have always been my biggest inspiration
How I have contributed to the community:
I have coached soccer and softball, assisted with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, served on the Arapahoe Youth League board (Cougars) for football and baseball. I volunteered in the schools for 16 years in various capacities. I currently serve on the Parks and Recreation Commission and have been on the board of education for the last four years.
What are the biggest issues facing Englewood Schools now:
Declining enrollment - our district is landlocked and has a lot of rental property and retired residents which leads to fewer students. Housing prices also have an impact due to the current real estate market - buyers don't want to spend the same price for a small, older home as a brand new home further out (in Brighton, for example).
We have already had to merge our middle schools to avoid even more program cuts - when you eliminate programs, you eliminate opportunities for children. We also need to get legislators to take a good look at school finance reform. Public education should be equal across the state, but that is not how it currently works.
