Candidate Q&A: Joe Jefferson - Dist. 1
Contributed by: Joe Jefferson on 9/18/2007

Editor's note: YourHub.com is asking candidates running for office in the November election to complete a questionnaire. Look for the Q&As to run in the print editions up to the Nov. 6 election.

My name: Joe Jefferson

Office I'm running for: Englewood City Council District 1

My family: My mother and I own and manage the Twin Dragon Restaurant that has been serving the Englewood community for over 30 years. My father is a retired Army reservist and currently lives in Morrison.

What I do: I manage the restaurant, I am also currently a full time student in my last year of law school at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. The restaurant, school, my other community efforts and this campaign keep me busy.

My favorite place in town to hang out: Table Steaks, Steak House 10 and Twin Dragon of course...

What I like most about living here: Our real sense of community here in Englewood. Englewood is a small community with great proximity to everything the metro area has to offer at an affordable cost of living. Englewood also has great unique businesses and people. A community is only as good as its people and I love living in a community that allows for input from those people that are interested in giving their two cents. I hope to encourage participation in our local community and government to improve our city.

What is my favorite thing to cook: Fried rice with any available ingredients

People who inspired me (and how): My family because we have realized a real "American Dream" on South Broadway through their blood, sweat and tears. Together, we can ensure the continued opportunity for success and quality of life in Englewood!

How I have contributed to the community: I am actively involved in the community, local chamber of commerce and currently serve on Keep Englewood Beautiful, a community improvement advisory board/commission to council.

What are the biggest issues facing Englewood now: The budget issue because without a properly financed city, we are powerless to act in whatever way we see fit.

Englewood nearly bankrupt. We can secure the financial future of our city by utilizing fiscal responsibility! I believe my education, financial background, and real world business experience from right here in Englewood give me the tools to be able to make the tough decisions that a difficult financial situation presents.

I will work to balance our budget. We can ensure the financial future of our great city by controlling spending and growing revenues. I will work to restore Englewood's appeal as a place to shop and do business. I will work to make our city's operations more efficient and prioritize our expenses so that our quality of life does not dwindle as a result of our current financial crisis.

I will serve the people of Englewood. I will serve the citizens by being available and open to the feedback and concerns of the people. I have plenty of energy and enthusiasm to provide a fresh approach and new vision for Englewood's future!
