Candidate Q&A: Gregory Szynskie - At Large
Contributed by: Gregory Szynskie on 9/19/2007

Editor's note: YourHub.com is asking candidates running for office in the November election to complete a questionnaire. Look for the Q&As to run in the print editions up to the Nov. 6 election.

My Name: Gregory Szynskie

Office I'm running for: Candidate-At-Large - Englewood City Council

Age: 54 years old

My family: Three daughters and their families, including eight grandchildren

What I do: I am currently a Program Analyst for the U. S. Geological Survey. I provide budget, finance and programmatic guidance to the office of Biological Informatics.

My favorite place in town to hang out: My favorite place to hang out is really at home. I read, play the piano, grill seafood and enjoy my Newfoundland dogs.

What I like most about living here: I most enjoy living in Englewood because in addition to all of the wonderful attributes to living in Colorado it provides me with affordable living, central geographic location as well as a quiet relatively crime free neighborhood.

My interests and hobbies: I enjoy all outdoor recreation - bicycling, hiking, and snowshoeing. I play the piano and I have been involved with the sport of purebred dogs for 25 years. I am a licensed judge for the American Kennel Club.

What is my favorite thing to cook: I enjoy cooking seafood on the grill

People who inspired me and how: My father inspired me. He lost his parents at a young age, was a WW II veteran and relying on a high school education, retired from an executive career with a supermarket chain in Nebraska. He was ever the mentor for me, stressing the importance of family and friends, the importance of honesty and selflessness with every thing he did.

How I have contributed to the community: During the 5 years I've lived in Englewood, I've been active with Pet Therapy at Craig Hospital. I've witnessed amazing situations of interaction between patients and families with my Newfoundland Dogs.

What are the biggest issues facing Englewood now: There are three major issues in Englewood:

* Effective budget management at a time when we face the prospect of declining sales tax revenues and increasing expenses. We need to look for ways to increase revenues while diligently managing our expenses.
* Improving upon the quality of life issues in the 2007 Citizen's Survey. The survey indicated that the quality of life today is not as good as it was during the last survey in 2001.
* Continued effort towards the redevelopment of both the residential and business districts of South Englewood (south of Hampden).
