Candidate Q&A: Bob McCaslin - At Large
Contributed by: Bob McCaslin on 9/26/2007

Editor's note: YourHub.com is asking candidates running for office in the November election to complete a questionnaire. Look for the Q&As to run in the print editions up to the Nov. 6 election.

My name: Bob McCaslin

Office I'm running for: Englewood City Council - At Large

Age: 58

My family: My wife Linda, the Principal of Bishop Elementary School in Englewood, four adult children, four grandchildren, and our pet dog Max.

What I do: Special Education teacher at Wildcat Mountain Elementary School in Douglas County.

My favorite place in town to hang out: The parks, athletics fields, the library and the backyard of our 102 year old home.

What I like most about living here: Having been born and raised in Englewood, I have many long time friends and experience a real sense of community. I believe we have a unique community with definite Englewood values.

My interests and hobbies: I have been an active athletic official for softball, baseball and wrestling for over 35 years for both youth and adults. I was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown, NY in 2004. I also enjoy gardening and spending time with my grandchildren.

What is my favorite thing to cook: Spaghetti

People who inspired me (and how): My parents, who have lived in Englewood for 58 years, have inspired me. Their positive attitude, work ethic, sense of family, "can do" attitudes and community spirit have all helped shaped who I am.

How I have contributed to the community: I believe I have been effective and responsive to citizens as a member of City Council for the past two years. I have been a council liaison to the Parks and Recreation Commission and Keep Englewood Beautiful Commission. Although not a member of the Code Enforcement Advisory Committee, I have been a regular attendee of meetings. I have become more informed and educated on municipal issues by attending the National League of Cities conference in Washington D.C., and the Colorado Municipal League conferences. I have worked with and been an advocate for our schools and youth in the community. I have organized fundraisers and volunteered for various organizations such as the American Diabetes Association, Special Olympics, and Juvenile Diabetes.

What are the biggest issues facing Englewood now: One of our major concerns is strategic planning for our future, as well as maintaining responsible annual budgets with reserves. We need to encourage economic development, leveraging our resources and exploring new funding sources. Maintain our quality of life amenities and promote cultural programs, activities and education. We need to look at improving and/or redeveloping available housing. Continuing to maintain our infrastructure is critical. Englewood is known for our cultural programs, which need to be promoted. Developing strong partnerships with local educational facilities to encourage academic excellence is another important issue.
