If this is you... then opportunity knocks
Contributed by: Jean Solis on 6/19/2007

Rep. Michael Garcia (HD-42) is looking for people interested in offering background to an Interim Committee of legislators who are studying the waiting list for long term care services and supports for people with developmental disabilities this summer. To that end, then, he has identified the criteria and the system he is using to identify those interested in this opportunity.

The Criteria

1) must be receiving services from Family Support, CES, SLS, or Comprehensive Services;
OR
must be waiting for services from Family Support, CES, SLS, or Comprehensive Services;

2) must be willing (with support) to offer a 5 minute presentation to the committee that helps it understand what the specific service provides and what impact having the service has/would have.

The System

If you meet the above criteria, you must forward the following information to Darla Stuart, Executive Director of The Arc of Aurora, at dsarcaurora@aol.com by Friday, June 22, 2007:

Name
Contact information (phone and email)
Address
City, zip
Community Centered Board (CCB)
Type of disability in family
Type of service and whether you are receiving it or waiting for it
Short paragraph describing what you would present (PowerPoint and
video/dvd equipment will be available)

Ms. Stuart is forwarding information to Rep. Garcia who will notify those he'd like to present by late June/early July. Rep. Garcia anticipates holding his first Interim Committee meeting where these presentations would be made in mid-July.

Rep. Garcia is chairing an Interim Committee of legislators this summer whose charge via HJR 1043 is to study the waiting list for long term care services and supports for persons with developmental disabilities. Specifically, the Committee is seeking ideas on ways to create more transparency, reliability, efficiency and accountability in the system whose job it is to provide those supports. In addition, the committee is seeking innovative options to meet the long-term health care needs of people with developmental disabilities; recommendations to eliminate all waiting lists for long-term health care services and supports for persons with developmental disabilities with all deliberate speed; and recommendations for the creation of new funding for persons with developmental disabilities on the waiting lists for services and supports.

The first Committee meeting will include these presentations by way of offering background to the ten appointed legislators (including Rep. Garcia) who make up the Committee. The requested presentations must be concise, focused, and cover the specific information outlined above which is included in the legislation that directs the Committee's work.

The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region is putting together
picture boards for the purpose of putting faces with the numbers to illustrate the people who are waiting for services in Colorado. This is a massive undertaking but The Arc of Pikes Peak is excited to pull it together. Please send pictures of your loved one who is on a waiting list. Please include his/her first name (only), and what number he/she is on his/her community waiting list and/or how long he/she has been waiting.

These pictures will be present at all interim committee meetings to remind everyone that t
he waiting list is about people, not just numbers!
