No more American idle
Contributed by: Janice Friddle on 1/10/2008

Come on Denver it's a brand new year. You have had time to make and break a few resolutions. Put yourself into something new. Become a volunteer!

For years southwest Denver has taken it on the chin. Almost everyone in the metro area knows that Westwood and the surrounding neighborhoods are places where bad things happen. It's true. We fight guns, gangs and graffiti, but nestled in the heart of southwest Denver is an energetic group of citizens working every day to make positive change.

So, where do you come in? The Southwest Improvement Council, Inc. (SWIC) provides a place for people age 60 and older to eat a hot-cooked meal every day for a nominal donation. Housing, foreclosure and credit counseling are available by appointment. On Fridays, SWIC and community partners distribute food to the neighbors. But there is so much more to do!

In 2008, SWIC will move into a brand new facility. But a building is just a building. What can you teach, lead or share? There is room for book clubs, arts, crafts, fitness, wellness and many other classes, games or gatherings. SWIC needs volunteers to do small household chores for people that can't do them; maybe because of age or ability.

Engage in the process. Whether you are a part of the greatest generation or a boomer, people need help. At the end of the day, you'll know you are making life in Denver a better place.
