1881 was a big year. Denver became the capital of the great state of Colorado, the 370-acre City Park was set aside for all to enjoy and Union Station opened at a cost of $525,000. It was also the year in which animals in the state got their first voice.
The Colorado Humane Society prosecuted its first case of animal abuse of a horse on Aug. 13, 1881. It was against a man who had "beat it, kicked it and nearly killed the poor beast." Some workers who saw it did the same to the man. The successful prosecution would set the stage for a 125-year history that created CHS's mission: to care for, cure and find good homes for all animals.
This year marks the Society's 125th year and the organization is celebrating with a big birthday bash. The money raised at the event will help the organization continue to be the state's only no-kill shelter and will help it realize a long-awaited dream: a permanent home.
Last year, the city of Littleton donated land for a new shelter. The city of
Englewood is close to completing a land donation for parking. Architectural drawings show the state-of-the-art facility that will have more room for animals, an on-site veterinary clinic and a place for animal lovers to meet, learn and care for our four-legged friends. The 20,000-square-foot shelter will also have a memorial wall and a retail shop.
CHS is currently trying to raise money to accomplish its dream. If you would
like to be a part of the Humane Society's future, come celebrate its past. The
birthday party is Aug. 19, 2006, from 6pm until midnight at the Adams Mark Hotel. There will be silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing. Tickets are $75 for a single seat, $125 for a couple and from $1,000 to $5,000 for a table of 10. For more information call 303.961.3151.
