Summer safety for your dog
Contributed by: Lisa Sickles on 6/25/2007

Summer is here.....hot sunny days, 4th of July, and lot's of ice cream. But while that is good news for usit could be bad news to our pets.

Here are a few tips to keep your dog happy and healthy this summer.

Remember to provide lots of water and shade for your pet, it would be best to leave them inside the house while you are gone for the day.

Now is not the time to have them accompany you on your errands, a few minutes in a hot car can make them sick or even kill them.

Do not walk or run the dog in the afternoon, try to get out early in the morning or late evening.

A kiddie pool is a fun way to let your dog cool off, one of my dogs will lay in her pool and rest her head on the edge. Yes, she even has a small umbrella to shade her....

While ice cream is one of our favorite treats, some dogs do not tolerate milk products very well. But the good news for them is that a product called Frosty Paws is available at your local grocery store in the freezer section. It is a frozen treat made specifically for dogs!

There is also a product that you can use to make big frozen 'pupsicles' for the dog to enjoy in the yard.

Camping is a fun way to spend time with your pet. Make sure you have flea and tick prevention.

If the dog has not been trained to listen off leash, don't try it! Take a leash with you, or a cable with a swivel hook to secure them...do not leave them unattended while tethered.

Fireworks can scare many dogs, it is to late to acclimate them this year, but there are ways to make them more comfortable.

Turn on your fans or air conditioning to help muffle the sound. A radio turned to a soft station can also help. Make sure that on the 4th the dog is in a very secure place....if they get scared they will jump a fence or go through a window to try to escape the sound.

There are ways to get the animal used to fireworks, it is called counter conditioning and desensitization. Contact a local Certified Pet Dog Trainer to help you learn the proper technique.

I hope everyone has a fantastic and safe summer!
