Those with Mental Illness Enjoy Therapeutic Benefits Provided by Shelter Animals

Each week a group of young adults enrolled in therapy at Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health Network (ADMHN) come to walk the dogs and socialize with animals at the Colorado Humane Society. Pictured is Ashley, who enjoys the affection of a beagle during a recent trip to the shelter. Ashley and others who are being treated for mental illness, enjoy this bonding time with the animals. "Holding the dogs and cats gives these individuals an opportunity to play the role of "care taker". It's incredibly therapeutic for their mental health and well being," says ADMHN counselor Molly Martyn, who leads the pet therapy program.
