Calling all violins, guitars and pianos

Musical Instruments Find a New Home through the MAGIC Arts Supply Drive

Did you play an instrument in high school or college, but now it's gathering dust in the closet? Did your child abandon his or her obsession with the guitar to pick up the drums? You can give these musical instruments a new home and new purpose by donating them to the 2006 MAGIC Arts Supply Drive.

MAGIC (Making Arts Great in Classrooms) will benefit more than 10,000 local elementary students by providing a variety of arts supplies and financial support for arts education programs. In addition to paints, pastels and markers, the Colorado Alliance for Arts Education hopes to collect more than 100 musical instruments to ensure students are exposed to a variety of musical experiences in school.

The Alliance welcomes musical instruments in any condition and will work with the donor to coordinate the delivery, maintenance and repair of the item. Small musical instruments can be placed in donation bins at any metro area Wild Oats Market, Guiry's or Meininger's Art Supplies stores. To donate larger or fragile instruments, contact the Alliance at 303.778.9374. So far, community members have generously given violins, guitars, pianos, a trombone and hand drums to the MAGIC Arts Supply Drive.

The Alliance will select 40 low-performing, low-income public schools throughout the Denver metro area as recipients of supplies collected through the program. Prospective schools are asked to fill out a brief application demonstrating their need for arts education assistance, which helps to match the donation with a school's unique needs.

The MAGIC Arts Supply Drive is sponsored by the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado, Colorado Council on the Arts, CBS4, Wild Oats and St. Mary Land & Exploration Company.Any metro area school can apply to the program by calling the Alliance at 303.778.9374.For more information about the MAGIC drive or to find the nearest donation center, visit www.artsedcolorado.org.
