Ant ethos -selfishness is out, cooperation is in
Contributed by: Carla Garrity on 8/30/2006

Robert Denerstein's review of The Ant Bully on 7/29/06 described an ant ethos: "Selfishness is out, cooperation is in." In Denver, one group has tried to recreate the 'ant ethos.'

Creating Caring Communities trains hundreds of thousands of teachers, parents and children through their program entitled Bully-Proofing Your School. Their work has focused on the role of "bystanders" who are members of a peer group who allow bullying to happen.

By teachingstudents to support their peers and intervene in safe and appropriate ways, there has been - repeatedly - a reduction in bullying behaviors and an increase in students' sense of safety.

Colorado took the headlines with the most devastating school shooting ever. Let's take the headlines again with the first program to curtail high school bullying.

Bully Proofing Your School will release a high school guide in Oct 2006 to accompany their already successful Early Childhood, Elementary and Middle School guides. No other program in the country has addressed high school bullying.

With this award, Creating Caring Communities could gift books to local high schools as well as offer training workshops.
