Our son Evan McAllister deserves to be the honorary team captain for the Colorado Rapids opening day because he is a tough little soccer fan and player that has been through a tough year.
Evan's daddy had less than a 5 percent chance of survival after a major heart attack that damaged 1/3 of his heart. We were on vacation in California when his daddy, Paul, technically died and was brought back to life. Evan was 4 years old at the time, away from home and having to see his daddy in ICU attached to all kinds of machines, being told to spend time with his daddy because they didn't know if he would survive.
His daddy made it against all odds. A lot of things changed at home and Evan was still concerned that his daddy would die. During this same time Evan went from being the oldest sibling to the middle child. A couple months earlier Evan's half brother came to live with us. His half brother Tyler was being abused by his real Mom and step dad. Evan was already dealing with having an abused child living in our home that required a lot of attention, therapy, etc.
We have seen Evan stuggle with these changes and it breaks our heart when he begs daddy not to die and to not let Tyler go back to the bad peoples house. We all had another scare in January when they told Paul to stop all activities, especially working out, because he was at high risk for sudden cardiac death.
Again Evan's little world was turned upside town, he was scared and we often heard him pray that daddy wouldn't die. On Valentine's day 2007 his daddy was in the hospital again to get a pacemaker/defib. and he had to stay in the hospital overnight. Evan has experienced a lot and has knowledge beyond his years in the areas of child abuse and cardiac arrest.
Evan deserves a break from it all, Soccer and Karate are his outlets. He deserves to be able to be a kid and I know being honorary team captain for the Rapids would be something he would talk about for a very long time. He loves Soccer!!!
