My parents are the epitome of Rockies fans.Their spring, summer and fall schedules revolve around the Rockies schedule. My parents,
Jim and
BonnieMullen, are 84 and 83 respectively. Last year, I moved them into a house with me. We had to delay the moving because the new house didn't have the cable hooked up yet and the move date would have fallen on opening day! They checked into a hotel with cable.
Probably the sweetest anecdote of many that I have of my parents and - in particular, my mother - happened about three years ago. My mother suffered a serious, life threatening staph infection from knee surgery. She was bed-ridden and without a knee for a couple of months. During the first few days of her recovery, she had a dream that
Todd Helton came by the house and asked her to go for a walk. She said in the dream they had a nice walk around the lake and when she woke up, she knew that she was going to get better. Unfortunately, it took seven surgeries and nearly a year and a half for the infection to finally leave her body. In the meantime, she was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease.
I would love to give my mother a gift of seeing the Rockies from the comfort of a suite surrounded by her family. She uses a walker at home but must use a wheel chair when she leaves the house. Her Parkinsons is controlled fairly well by medication. This debilitating disease has affected her body but her mind and her sense of humor are definitely intact.
My parents raised 8 children in a happy and loving environment. We all do what we can to return some of the joy and pleasure they gave us growing up.The suite would be one of the highlights of their remaining years - and if Todd Helton could tip his hat to Mom from the mound, that would be the grand slam!
And if we don't win the suite, please thank Todd Helton for giving my Mom the incentive to walk again and the Rockies for bringing excitement and fun into my parents lives every game - win or lose.
