Home(base) is where the heart is
Contributed by: curtis koch on 7/30/2007

Hi, my name is Kyle Koch. I'm fourteen years old, and I've been playing baseball since I was four years old. Last year, for my thirteenth birthday on May 20th, I took three of my friends to a Rockies game to celebrate. This year, I couldn't celebrate much because on May 29th I had to have open heart surgery to put in a valve.

I was able to play spring baseball this year with my team, Creek Blue, but I had to stop as our summer season started to have the surgery. After I had the surgery, my baseball team and my coaches gave me a lot of encouragement to get well and heal. They did not forget about me just because I could not finish out the final few games with them. Instead they came to visit me, sent me get well cards, and brought the evening meals to my family for over two weeks.

My team ended up going to the world series championship game for our age group division. I was well enough to join the team in the dugout for the final two games and be the bat boy (even though in my heart I really wanted to be swinging the bat.) I've been trying to think of some way to let them know how much their support means to me.

Since we all like baseball so much and since this is the last season we all get to play together, I think going to a Rockies game would be fun. I would like to take them to the August 8th game or the Sept. 3rd game (maybe Barry Bonds will break the record that day.) Thank you for reading this.

Sincerely,
Kyle X. Koch
