What better way to kick off the basketball season than with an afternoon of exhibition basketball games? St. Louis Catholic School in Englewood held their annual For the Love of the Game basketball kick off last Sunday. The gym was packed with parents, students, alumni, teachers, coaches, and seminarians who came to participate, cheer, or watch the games. Third- and fourth-graders on the Widget basketball teams began the afternoon with a series of basketball drills. Members of the JV basketball team squared off against each other in scrimmage game. Varsity basketball players on both the girls' and boys' teams had the opportunity to play against coaches, alumni, and teachers. The final competition pitted JV and Varsity girls against the JV and Varsity boys. The afternoon began with a free-throw contest. St. Louis Catholic School Principal, Pattie Hagen offered a free-dress day to the entire school if she made a free throw. Although her shot just barely missed the rim, she sought help from Seminarian Justin Hall. He made his shot and students at the school will be treated to a free dress day on Tuesday, November 3rd. Proceeds from the event went to the Ted Tholen Memorial Fund. Ted Tholen was the Athletic Director at St. Louis from 1985 - 2005. The Memorial Fund is used to support the St. Louis - St. Bernadette Widget Basketball League and students who might not be able to afford to play sports.
