A wise statesman once said "those who forget history are destined to repeat it." Hopefully, the residents of City Council District 1 do not suffer from short-term memory loss.
In January 1997, fueled by incorrect information and unproven statements, the residents of District 1 recalled their council member. One of the "charges" against this council member is that she did not live in her district - a violation of the City Charter. Videotapes and pictures produced by the recall committee, including the current District 1 council member
Ray Tomasso
, supposedly "proved" this fact. (Incidentally, the recalled council member not only lived in her district the entire time on Council, but also still resides in the same house today).
The same cannot be said for the current District 1 representative. Mr. Tomasso currently lists his "address" as 2905 S. Elati St. - a quick drive past this property would indicate otherwise - not only does the property have a building permit on it, but also a call to the city's building department will net the information that the property does not yet have a Certificate of Occupancy. Interestingly enough, Council member Tomasso's wife's address is 3056 S. Cornell Circle - a very nice home, obviously occupied, but located within the Arapahoe Acres subdivision of Englewood --- and located within Council District 2!
One would assume that Mr. Tomasso "lives" with his wife since it would be "illegal" to live at the property he lists as his residence. This fact is well known amongst Mr. Tomasso's fellow Councilmembers and city staff - in fact he has openly bragged about this fact in Council meetings and in other public meetings such as the Library Board.
The residents of District 1 deserve better than a representative who openly deceives them! We the voters in District 1 have a real chance at righting the wrong done to us the last four years by choosing a representative that lives and works in District 1 -- mark your ballot for
Joe Jefferson
.
