BLACK and gold OUT!
Contributed by: Tim Ringel on 1/20/2006

The Denver Broncos are headed back to the Super Bowl for the sixth time in franchise history thanks to a true team win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday January 22, 2006. This win was like no other in the history of the NFL, the credit goes not to one individual player for a spectacular play or to an individual coach on Shanahan's staff for implementing a unstoppable scheme. There are such players and coaches to be named but the fans of the Broncos throughout the Rocky Mountain Region are those that are ultimately responsible for the win.
At precisely 4:08pm MST the power for the entire Rocky Mountain Region went out, it just so happened to coincide with the Steelers lining up for the game tying two-point conversion with no time remaining on the game clock.
When the lights finally came back on seventeen minutes later the Broncos were headed to Superbowl XL. At the exact moment that Jerome Bettis received the handoff from "Big Ben" and headed toward the line of scrimmage the power outage occurred. It was later ruled by the replay official in conjunction with a conference call with the commissioner of the NFL and the Players Union that there was significant light available on the play so it would not be replayed and the fumble caused by Trevor Pryce would stand.
As Bettis headed toward the line he was met in the backfield by the Broncos Trevor Pryce who jarred the ball loose with a vicious hit.
Steelers coach Bill Cowher threw out his red flag arguing that there was not sufficient light and that the play should be run again thus implementing the rare conference call.
Hours later it was determined by Excel Energy that the massive power outage was caused by the overwhelming demand for the final seconds of the game on television. It was estimated that every television in the Denver metro area was on, 99.87% of the televisions in Colorado were on, and that 84.7% of the televisions in the Rocky Mountain region were on in the moments before the blackout.
The region which includes over 8 million homes was remarkably calm during the seventeen minute blackout. No rioting or looting was reported at all, it appears that almost every individual in the region remained glued to their televisions and radios awaiting the outcome.
For the sixth time in history the Broncos are headed back to the big dance and this time if they are the victors, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen can proclaim, "This one is because of the fans."
