DC comes up short against Holy Family
Contributed by: Barry Meyer on 9/24/2006

The Denver Christian football team traveled to Broomfield last Friday night to play an old rival, Holy Family. The Tigers, currently ranked #2 in 2A, are the defending state champs. Since moving out of northwest Denver to its new location in the late nineties, Holy Family has grown to over 500 students, nearing the upper limits for competing at the 2A level. The football program has prospered as well, winning two state championships in the past 5 years. Needless to say, DC was facing a formidable opponent.

The game got off to a fast start. After a 50-yard-kickoff return, Holy Family scored in just three plays, when Kurt Borecky beat his DC defender and caught a pass from Drew Hawkins, son of CU football coach Dan Hawkins, for a 38-yard touchdown. Not to be outdone, DC's John Lenderink returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown. Thus barely two minutes into the game each team had scored once. Unfortunately for DC, the game was an uphill struggle from that point on. After stopping the Tigers and forcing a punt, DC fumbled the punt and gave the ball to Holy Family inside DC's 40 yard line. Several plays later, the Tigers scored to make the score 14 - 7.

As the second quarter began, the gray and threatening skies opened up, and for most of the quarter, the game was played in a steady rain. Each team's defense managed to bottle up the opponent's offense until just before the half, when Holy Family's Borecky scored on the exact same play as his first touchdown. DC left the field at halftime, frustrated, feeling that but for three mistakes the Crusaders might have had a 7 - 0 lead.

After the halftime break, the rain ceased and DC's defense held Holy Family to a field goal until late in the fourth quarter when Borecky gathered in a punt and weaved 62 yards for his fourth touchdown of the night. Unfortunately, DC's offense struggled until the final minutes of the game when it mounted a 60-yard drive culminated by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Gandy Henry to Jon Vander Hoek. The 30-15 loss evened DC's record at 2 and 2.

John Lenderink rushed for 71 yards on 21 carries to add to his kickoff return. Gandy Henry was 8 for 20 for 89 yards and one touchdown. Sean Van Kooten caught five passes for 48 yards, and on defense, Mitch Herren had one interception in the end zone to stop a Holy Family drive in the fourth quarter.

The Crusaders face another old rival, Kent Denver, this week in an important league game Saturday at 1 pm at Kent Denver.
