Before the high school girls basketball season began sports writers across the state weighed in with their picks for the Colorado top ten teams.
The Cherry Creek Bruins did not make that list. Now with the regular season over and the playoffs started this home town team is 20-2 for the season, first in the Centennial League and ranked six
th in the state.
How did this happen?
Hard work -the hard work of the players and Coach
Missy Steck (who was a high school and college star in her day and a stellar player in the ABL).Coach Steck with Assistant Coaches
John Steck and
MaryBeth Gallagher have never met a running drill they didn't love.
They don't have a team of superstars, but instead 10 solid players who have learned to win as a team.
Allison Scholbe and
Kelley Andersen have been the consistent high scorers.
They lead as team captains along with fellow senior
Maggie Morton. Two more seniors add wisdom and solid defense:
Emily Lozow and
Taylor Brown. There is also youth in junior players
Rachel Roberson,
Katie Hooten, and
Keri Rattiner. The team is complete with sophomores
Haley Haddock, and
Kristen Miller.
No one knows what the playoffs will bring, but rest assured the Cherry Creek Bruins will fight to win!
The Bruins have a bye the first round of the playoffs and will play their first playoff game on Friday, February 23 at home.
