GW track team runs towards state
Contributed by: Katie Whitnah on 5/17/2006

With the arrival of spring, the George Washington High School track and field team has sprung into action.

With the start of a new season, the team came prepared to do their best, and so far they have surpassed all expectations. This season, both the boys and girls track teams have seen great improvements in personal and overall team abilities.

Old players and new players alike have been working hard to improve, and their training has paid off in their performances.

Returning George Washington High School senior Talaya Owens is expected to do well at state.

"She was a state champ two years ago," said coach John Gregorio.

Owens herself feels confident about this season.

"[I feel] good 'cause I've been training since March of last year. I think we should win state this year," said Owens.

According to sophomore Joseph Harris, "G-Money [Terrence McGaughy], Quinton Dodson [and] Darius Reed" are also expected to do well at the state competition.

As for new players, their skills are impressive as well.

"We have a freshman, Renata [Garbowski] who's going to be a lot of help. She's good at distance and sprints," said senior Malefia Hailu.
In terms of overall team performance, things are also looking bright.

"We've been going good. We took second last track meet," said senior Robert Dorsey.

This excellent performance may in part be due to the great inner dynamics of the team.

"It's pretty cool. We work well together; we've got all our fastest people back. We've got great chemistry," said senior Ian Alexander.

However, as the season continues, some players are finding it difficult to balance both the life of a student and that of an athlete.

"We still have some people who need to be eligible grade wise," said Dorsey.

Also, conflict between the state track competition May 20 and GW's prom seems unavoidable, because the prom on the same day as the state competition.

Hopefully, players will have time to prepare before the prom, which begins at eight, but some players still have doubts.

"I'm excited about state, but the fact that I'm a senior and it's on prom [means] it's gonna be hectic for females 'cause they have to do nails, feet...I'm not gonna stress because I know people who ran track and went to prom last year," said senior Andrea Campbell.

For the GW track team, despite a few bumps along the way, this season has been an overall success, and it continues to look promising as the end of the season approaches.
